21. If an equilibrium
constant is very much smaller than 1.0, what does this tell us about
the standard free energy change? What does this tell us about the
spontaneity of the reaction, when begun from standard conditions?
22. The decomposition of NO to oxygen and nitrogen is a highly
exothermic process. Is heat absorbed, or emitted, during the decomposition?
If more decomposition products are desired at equilibrium, should
this reaction be carried out at high, or low, temperatures? Does
the standard free energy change become more positive, or more negative,
as the temperature is raised?
23. In view of your answers to Question 22, how can there
be appreciable amounts of NO in a polluted atmosphere at room temperature?
