The ChemPilot Project is an initial step towards bringing into reality the concept of a portable electronic lab notebook. Laboratories of the future will be paper-free zones. Results and observations will be recorded digitally at the workbench, allowing flawless and efficient transfer of information to a desktop computer. Hence, the aim of this project was to create a suite of software applications
for a handheld computer that assists research chemists in their work.
The Palm PDA
was ideally suited to this role. Not only is it compact, robust and
easy to use, but it is also by far the most popular handheld on the
market.
Since its release in April this year, the software has proved extremely popular with Palm users, with over 2000 downloads to date. This emphasizes the enormous potential of these devices in the laboratory, and will hopefully encourage further reseach in this area. |
