        Phenols, Aromatic Alcohols

Some other simple phenolic compounds are shown above and on the next page, together with their values. The ortho, meta, and para isomers of cresol, which differ only in the relative positions of substituents around the aromatic ring, all have roughly the same weak acidity. The -OH group is only acidic when it is attached directly to an aromatic ring. Benzyl alcohol is not an acid; it is an alcohol similar to ethanol.

The -CH- group effectively insulates the -OH from the ring and prevents it from joining the delocalized electron system.

Benzyl alcohol is a structural isomer of the three cresols, since they all have the ame overall formula, CHO. So, for that matter does anisole, or methyl phenyl ether (above).
